On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious start to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Defying suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Core Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
