Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to question specific decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
