The Trump phenomenon's most telling and characteristic moments – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of a few weeks, the US president started showing all observers his intentions for a lavish reception room double the dimensions of the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to build it.
He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of fatalities from his cuts to USAID is 600,000 and rising, and presently research forecast his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have dared – really, no other president would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the White House to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of numerous the richest Americans, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.
We went from 'the gentle will obtain the world' into 'the meek shall die of cholera'
As confusing as it is to witness the president seek to颠覆 the old idea regarding democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there is one large group of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he denounced in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the fastest-growing cadre of Americans might have little sense of him as they consider themselves skeptics or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly definitely not the story of a powerful ruler arising; rather, a baby is born to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to escape secret police. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his doctrine concerns compassion for others, specifically for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. The Savior's reaction to violence is to present the opposite cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a way to educate the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing states that when a person pilfers your jacket you should give them your pullover also.
The obvious and straightforward fact that the Jesus from scripture requests a kind of radical love focused on the needy is what has always made Christianity something of a scandalous religion: appealing to the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be restrained. In the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Best Among Us
Therefore I have felt inspired to observe the persistent defiance against Trump arise during the previous year. It has provided significant comfort to participate in developing the movement that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired voters to show up in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags throughout each rally and calls to the best parts in US history.

The country is optimally secured, essentially, by relationship to the best in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended through connection to elements that cause it to be special and beautiful, which is the example of Jesus. In both situations does it mean pretending the worst about the nation and Christianity never occurred; it signifies both meekness and faith, a blend that committed national faithful should embrace.
